Pulled up this spreadsheet from their WATMM interview. Who knows for sure? not me but i tend to read their interviews a lot. My understanding is that that the most heavy Nord Modular usage was around the Chiastic Slide/LP5/Cichlisuite/EP7 era in the late 90s, though for sure they used it in their Quaristic era as well and maybe even still today.

I thought they also had a heavy Nord Modular phase too. Im pretty sure Autechre are purely Max based at the moment, 99% sure they dont use hardware at present. They even released their backup sysex files for their monomachine and machinedrum from that tour a few years ago. They did that on an Elektron Monomachine/Machinedrum, A Nord G2 rack and an MPC1000. I think this is mostly true with the exception being Quarastice. Not to be too pedantic, but I think most of Autechre's output from EP7/LP5 onwards has been mostly done in Max/MSP! Someone probably knows better than I do, but this is my recollection from reading the AMA on WATMM years and years ago Then again, if they were ever live near me I'd go, so there's that. Love almost every track they've ever made. Maybe it's music for the future, but right now I'm still enjoying all their previous albums.

I don't think it's necessarily the gear just as much as they found their own sound and it happens to use more exotic synths and/or acoustic instruments and a larger set of collaborators.Īnd apart from that obviously there's a tectonic shift in Autechre's output when they got into Max/MSP!Īnd basically as curious as I found that music, I lost my taste for Autechre when they when full bore computer/coding the music. I might hazard a guess that Coil developed musically in a direction I like a lot around the time of Moon's Milk and all their output after that.
